Luke Townsend – Head Coach & Co-Owner
I have always had a love for fitness and sports since I can remember and have always given different sports a try. Like many teenagers, I grew up playing football for various teams which I stopped at around 18 years old. Following this, I came across weight training at a Globo Gym where I obtained qualifications and quickly began working. The job allowed me to coach multi sport activities for children which I loved – but this was just the beginning. At some point I knew I’d want more. I discovered CrossFit when I was 19 years old and after watching a documentary, I immediately knew it was something I wanted to undertake. After becoming a dedicated member, I started Coaching CrossFit part-time in 2015 whilst still working as a fitness instructor else where. I left my position as a fitness instructor to go full time here at CFD in 2016 and love every second of it.

Kate McCall – Coach & Co-Owner
My sporting background comes from athletics, which I have been involved in for many years. I was a competitive 400m runner for around 7 years and took up Crossfit to supplement this in October 2013. In 2015 I decided to train fully for CrossFit (mainly due to injury), in which I now compete competitively.
Highlights of my athletics include reaching British Championships in 2014 and making the Crossfit Meridian Regionals in 2016. I hope to be able to use my sporting experience to help people reach there goals at Crossfit Derby – whether it be to compete within their sport or to just get fit!

Jy Robinson – Coach
After giving up playing competitive football at the age of 17/18, I was looking for a new sport to get stuck into. After trying my hand at a few I stumbled across a youtube video of people hitting Fran. At first I was sceptical that workouts so short could be effective but after getting destroyed by Fran myself, I knew that CrossFit was for me. I soon sought out a CrossFit box, which is when I found CrossFit Derby. After spending most of my spare hours inside the gym, I soon developed a love for coaching. I spent the last couple of years coaching CrossFit at a couple different CrossFit boxes before making my way back to Derby where I continue to develop myself as a competitor/coach/person & loving every minute of it!

With fifteen years field hockey experience I have represented several successful clubs within the East Midlands; most recently assigned to Burton Hockey Club playing competitively in the Midlands Premier League. Holding various National Governing Body coaching badges I have worked in the community delivering multi-sport to young adults within Derbyshire. I obtained employment in health and fitness where I qualified as a Personal Trainer before diverting my career into teaching. I graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a 1:1 classification degree in Sport and Exercise Science and I also hold QTS in Secondary Physical Education. I joined CrossFit Derby several years ago and always sought to share my underpinning knowledge and experiences. Yang Lay – Sports Therapist
I have always been in love with sport – ever since I was 10 years old. I have tried my hand in many sports, such as football, basketball, badminton and even trampolining. By doing all these sports came along a plethora of injuries and it piqued my interest in the recovery and treatment of them. Therefore this is why I am committed to offering the best treatment options I can as a qualified sports therapist.
